Dear friends,

First, I'd like to give a warm welcome to the people I met at Annmarie Garden's Artists in Action event (and the Fairy Festival) a few weeks ago--I'm so glad you're here!

Tonight, Annmarie Garden is hosting an After Hours event from 5-7pm with live music, food trucks, a cash bar, and exciting artwork!

The Still Life exhibition at the Staunton Augusta Art Center closes tomorrow, May 8th, so this is your last chance to visit.

And my website *finally* got a facelift. Let me know what you think!

All the details are below.

Love,

Barb

P.S. Artists in Action was fantastic, and I have a new project in the works. I will update you on these in a week or 2.

A dozen new paintings of flowers are in the shop, and the Bloom & Grow exhibition at Annmarie Garden is up through August.  Read on…

Hi there,
I started a series of flower paintings when my mom asked for a painting of lilies for her birthday back in June. I made her painting and just kept on going. A dozen new paintings are in the shop now priced $100 each, which includes US shipping.

I’m taking a printmaking class in August though the Art Students League of New York. I’ll be posting pictures of my experiments to Instagram and Facebook. The pandemic is truly awful, but I am grateful for the sudden proliferation of online learning opportunities.

As usual, I ship on Fridays. Stay safe!

October 2019 Newsletter

The exhibition in North Beach is ending, while 3 (yes three!) are opening simultaneously. I'll be at all the receptions, so please do stop by. Details to follow…

I would be pleased to have you as my guest at the Opening Reception for....well, everything. "Rise!" and "Otherwise Mundane" open on the same night in Worcester County, so I will be at both parties, first Ocean City, then Snow Hill. A week later "Darkness Falls" opens in Solomons, MD. The "Inspirational Invitational" closes on Sunday, so there's still time to catch that show, too. All the details are below.
Love,
Barb

Rise!

"Rise!" is a woman-powered multi-media extravaganza at the Art League of Ocean City Center for the Arts. At first glance, my paintings of windows do not seem very GRL PWR, but they feel that way to me. My "Inside/Outside" series was inspired by the work of modern master Lois Dodd. Lately I am fascinated by the layers in windows: the reflected images, the window itself as object, and the fragments of revealed interior. Like the layers of people: what we project, what we are, and what we conceal or reveal.

Opening Reception

Otherwise Mundane

I excited to be one of the featured artists at Bishop's Stock Fine Art, Craft & Wine in October. This group of my paintings feature special moments in "Otherwise Mundane" places, like my suburban neighborhood, parking lots, and office parks. As they say, what you pay attention to becomes important. And I'm paying attention, especially while running errands.

When Darkness Falls: Night Explorations

What happens when you doggedly study and paint nocturnes for a year? You earn a place in a juried show at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center. I did, and I will be accepting enthusiastic high-fives at the Opening Reception on Friday, Oct 11th. All of my paintings in "Darkness" were made during my Artist Residency at Lacawac Sanctuary this summer.

Opening Reception

Free for members, $5 everyone else.
Must be 21+ to attend.

Groovy Garden Gala at Annmarie

People keep asking how the Groovy Garden Gala was, and I realized that I never posted photos from the event. I was part of the entertainment at the Gala at Annmarie Garden on Friday, July 12th. I was invited to make a floral painting during the party, which will be donated and auctioned off that night to raise money to purchase native plants for the garden surrounding the arts center.

This is the most eyeliner I've ever worn in my life. Don't expect to see it again any time soon. A dozen q-tips lost their lives in the touch up process. But I'm really digging the white fingernail polish because it weirdly makes me think of White Out.

Here was the premise of the event. The gala took place during the H2O exhibition at Annmarie Garden. The painting above is "The Fury" by John Aquilino.

On the morning of the event, floral designers from Southern Maryland were invited into the gallery to create arrangements inspired by the artwork of their choice. Kathy Glockner of the St. Mary's County Garden Club created this stunning arrangement.

And seven local painters were invited to create a painting during the gala that was inspired by the floral design. The canvas they provided for me was 20 x 20 inches--SOOOO BIG for me. I chose "The Fury" and got to work. Below are some photos from the painting process and the final artwork.

Here I am with Kathy Glockner and both of our creations. She was so excited that I chose her arrangement to paint, and she purchased the final painting at auction. Thanks, Kathy!

Oh, and I got my picture in the paper!!! Thank you, Marty Madden of The Calvert Recorder. I'm so glad that Annmarie Garden invited me to participate in this event.

May 2019 Newsletter

Hi there! I have 2 paintings in the Plein Air show at Bishop's Stock--through June 5th. And now my mugs & totes are in the JPPM gift shop. Read on…

Barb Mowery's plein air paintings from 2019.

Plein Air Show

Bishop’s Stock is showing a selection of plein air (outdoor) paintings by Paint Snow Hill alumni through June 5th. I have 2 paintings in the show, made during my family/painting trip to Delmarva in April. The boat painting “Dream Catcher” has already sold, but the house “Feeling Neighborly” is available.

In fact, Bishop’s Stock has about 30 of my paintings right now. And they will show them to you if you know the secret password… Just kidding! That is *not* how galleries work. All you have to say is that you would like to see some of my work, and Ann, Gilly, or Doug will gladly point you in the right direction. You can even make an appointment to look at paintings if your schedule does not match the gallery’s hours. Don’t let “gallery” intimidate you—they are super friendly!

Barb Mowery tote bag available at Jefferson Patterson Park.

Totes & Mugs at JPPM

The Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum gift shop now carries my coffee mugs and tote bags. If you live in Southern Maryland, you can save yourself the cost of shipping with a visit to the park. One of my favorite annual events is coming up soon: Children’s Day on the Farm. It’s a celebration of Southern Maryland’s rich agricultural heritage with antique tractors, pony rides, shows, games, petting zoo, food, and more. Children's Day is Sunday, June 2nd from 11am-5pm, free admission.

For most of May I've been doing chores, like painting old frames a nice warm, dark grey and working in my garden. Seeing the product of your labor is so satisfying. I'll be back to painting and updating the Etsy shop in June.

March 2019 Newsletter

The sunshine feels so good--I'm ready to paint outside again! The Artists in Action program was a great experience. I've got artwork hanging around town. I’m planning something different for April. And I just got invited to come to another artist residency. Read on…

This is a collage of photos of Barb Mowery participating in the Artists in Action program at Annmarie Garden in Maryland in 2019.

Artists in Action Residency

Last month I moved my art studio into the main gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, in Dowell, MD, as part of the Artists in Action Program. I only had a week there, but I was amazingly productive during my brief stay. I used daytime source photos to create nighttime paintings. In cinema it’s a technique called “day for night," and it's a process American painter Frederic Remington used 100+ years ago to create his nocturnes. I met visiting artists from near and far and had fun talking with visitors about my experiments. Thank you to everyone who came to see me! (The 2 photos on the left are by Joann Foltz.)

Barb Mowery painting plein air in Snow Hill Maryland.

Commission Snow Hill

Sadly, 2018 was the 15th and final Paint Snow Hill annual plein air (outdoor) painting event. It was my 12th year! I am not quite ready to kick the habit. So I will be traveling to paint in and around Snow Hill, Maryland, in late April.

There's no 'Wet Paint' Show & Sale at the end of the weekend, so I am going to take on a maximum of three (3) commissioned paintings in Snow Hill this year. Full information about purchasing a commission is here. If you are interested, watch your inbox next week. And let me know if you have questions.

A suburban landscape painting by Barb Mowery of her neighbor's house and a wheel barrow.

Featured Artists at JPPM

During the month of March, the gift shop at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum has expanded into a neighboring room (to the left of the gift shop), and I have 5 paintings in the exhibition. The shop at JPPM is full of beautiful artwork, crafts, and jewelry all made by Maryland artists. With Easter & Mother’s Day fast approaching, I guarantee that you’ll find something meaningful for the special women in your life there.

Salon des Refuses

I have 4 paintings in the current show at Annmarie Garden, Annmarie's Salon des Refuses, up through April 22nd. Here's a photo of me on opening night with one of my paintings: the colorful jumble in the upper right corner (photo by Pam Teague). And for more info on the show, follow this link.

Lacawac Artists Residency

I have just been invited to participate in the artists residency at Lacawac Sanctuary near Lake Ariel, PA, in August. There I will be continuing my investigation of nighttime painting and Frederic Remington. I'll share more on this as we get closer.

Featured at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum Gift Shop

Here's a shot from the super-stealthy-art-show at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum through the end of March. My paintings in the special exhibit are thorns between 2 roses: Carol Wade and Alison Barry. I am facetiously calling it “super-stealthy-art-show” because it’s been up since Feb 19th-ish, but no one seems to know it's up. The gift shop at JPPM is full of beautiful artwork, crafts, and jewelry all made by Maryland artists. Now through the end of March, the gift shop has expanded into a neighboring room (to the left of the gift shop). Easter & Mother’s Day are fast approaching, and I guarantee that you’ll find something meaningful for the special women in your life at JPPM.

Annmarie's Salon des Refuses show opening

You are invited to an Art Opening tonight at Annmarie Garden!

Annmarie's Salon des Refuses
Modeled after the Parisian Salon of 1862, Annmarie's Salon des Refuses, or 'exhibition of rejects', will include works that have previously been turned down by a gallery or show, or just haven't sold. Let's celebrate rejects, underappreciated, and misunderstood works - and give them another chance at life!  With all works priced under $350, this is a wonderful opportunity to find a fabulous work of art that someone else rejected, but might be perfect for you!  We'll be selling the works off the wall, so you can take the art home to enjoy immediately.  Expect to see works from Southern Maryland artists and beyond!

Abstract painting by American artist Barb Mowery.

The pieces of art I chose to put in this show are not "rejects." They are 4 nice paintings from my brief, ill-fated love affair with epoxy. If you are familiar with epoxy (as I, at the time, was not), then you already know that these paintings are super-glued into their frames. *Big sigh.*

I have so learned my lesson about using epoxy. But I cannot unframe them without damaging the paintings or the (gorgeous custom maple) frames or both. That made them perfect candidates for this show. The prices have been lowered. I would rather see them hanging on your wall than collecting dust in my storage closet.

Hope you can make it to the show!
Love,
Barb
